Never stop learning
We talk a lot about books on our Instagram. Because one of our mottos is “Never stop Learning’ This means not only we are constantly reading non-fiction books but we listen to podcasts, attend events and follow experts online.
Recently we shared a book that truly helped us find the confidence in the way we work. The book is called ‘The Multi-Hyphenate Method’
We always knew we were good at multiple things but we were worried about how this could be perceived, as we were educated to respect brands that had speciality and expertise.
Now being a multi-hyphenate doesn’t mean you aren’t an expert in anything, it doesn’t mean being a “jack of all trades, master of none” It means your main profession and your passions has led you to explore and gain experience in other subjects which are mostly aligned with your profession. This means you are good at more than one thing and you are not willing to give up on one of those because you are more than capable of embracing your side projects.
For me and Esma this is the case. This sounds like bragging, but please trust me when I say it took me a long time to get here. I have now been working in the creative sector for 15 years. I have worked in various design and ad agencies. I saw the beginning of the internet and the flash based websites, the rise of personal branding, the beginning and the rise of social media. And I had to adopt to all of these changes. I had to do a lot of learning and practising.
I have been designing for web for 14 years but I’ve not started calling myself a UX Designer until recently. I have been managing social media accounts for about 10 years and I still don’t call myself a social media expert. So believe it takes me a long time to recognise my expertise in a subject matter.
Finally I’m happy with where I am, like I said it took me a long time to wrap my head around the way I work. Yes I am a UX designer, I direct a team of developers and designers to deliver great quality WordPress sites, I run monthly events and practise calligraphy and design for different media through Me Design. And I love them all.
I’m also so happy to have cross passed my path with another multi-hyphenate. Esma is super talented and extremely dedicated to everything she does. Esma in has been designing and specialising in social media for about 10 years. She has always had a talent and calling for arts, so Esme never stopped illustrating and making art. Using her passion in her designs and her daily life has allowed her create a niche style in her illustrations.
Together we keep doing our thing with joy and keep on learning.
